The American racing industry won the lottery today when owner Jerry Moss announced Zenyatta will race again. Now every track will be lobbying to have the unique mare race there. Both Santa Anita and Hollywood attracted meet best attendances when the mare paraded in front of the grandstands.
I am thrilled by the decision. I believe the horse loves receiving the attention from the thousands of admirers she attracts to the tracks. If she is sound, which has never been questioned, she should continue. Jockey Mike Smith admits he has never got to the bottom of her. Any race in California should be no more than a well paid exercise canter anyway, leading up to a match up with Rachel Alexandra who is afraid to come out to SoCal to challenge Zenyatta.
The owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, are not in it for the money(they have plenty) they are huge fans of horse racing. The thrill this horse has given them may never be repeated so why not roll the dice one more time? “It is what she likes to do” Moss told the jubilant racing media adding ” I love racing and racing needs stars and we have got one.”
The mare, named after an album by The Police, was introduced as a three year old at Hollywood Park, where she is stabled, in November 2007 and is unbeaten in her fourteen races including two Breeders Cup races.
